REVIEW: NORTHERN ITALIAN WITH SOME NOVEL TWISTS IN THE EAST VILLAGE

Don’t berate yourself if your knowledge of restaurant-menu Italian leads you to the assumption that a restaurant named Gnocco is a paean to the popular potato dumpling that is a commonplace in New York’s Italian restaurants.

AFTER 20 YEARS IN NEW YORK’S EAST VILLAGE, GNOCCO HAS BECOME AN ITALIAN CLASSIC

Calvin Trillin, upon suddenly remembering a favorite Chinatown restaurant, remarked that New York is the only city in the world where you could forget a restaurant that good existed. So, too, how could I possibly have forgotten about Gnocco, now twenty years old, a place I haven’t visited in a decade?

NEW YORK CORNER
By John Mariani

The word gnocco means “dumpling” as well as being affectionate slang for “pretty girl,” and there is a playfulness—call it la dolce vita, if you wish—about an evening at Gnocco. The long dining room enters onto an enclosed garden whose cherry tree will burst into bloom in a month or so. The rough brick interior walls are hung with the work of East Village artists and photographers, and the lighting is quite pleasant.

GNOCCO CELEBRATES 20 YEARS OF CLASSIC ITALIAN COOKING IN THE EAST VILLAGE

At the heart of the East Village is a gastrointestinal treasure in true New York fashion. For the last 20 years, Gnocco has served fine Emilia-Romagna food from pizza and pasta to their namesake Gnocco. The dishes are old-school, nostalgic recreations of the owner’s childhood favorites back in Modena, Italy. Now, after 20 years, Gnocco has modernized, adding vegan, vegetarian, and gluten-free options, as well as intuitive touchscreen tablet menus for all guests. But the passion for the authentic hasn’t changed.
